Our History

Seafarers’ House San Juan was first inaugurated on 2003 with financial support of the Norwegian Seafarers’ Union and the International Transportation Worker’s Federation. The original structure of the building consisted of a single plan which was build in the late 19th century. The second floor and façade toward O’ Donnell street, were added in a second phase construction which presumably ended in 1914 as evidenced by the inscription at the top of the façade itself. A third intervention occurred at an unspecified date which added stairs to the roof and the balconies of the inner courtyard. Responding to a spirit of international cooperation, the Norwegian Seafarers Union and the International Federation of Indus-tries of Transportation, ambitious assumed the task of performing a complete restoration of the building for the purpose of providing a home away from home for seafarers and everyone else who visits San Juan, and to promote their integration into the community.

20th Anniversary Book

The main goal throughout the last 20 years of Seafarrers’ House San Juan has been to provide a home away from home to seafarers visiting the welfare center. During the two-decade-long journey, the contributions of the center’s employees and of the Norwegian Seafarers’ Union officers who are part of its leadership, are noteworthy. This publication is designed to commemorate the journey from the initial recognition of the need to set up a welfare center for seafarers in one of the busiest cruise ports in the Caribbean to the myriad of services available at Seafarers’ House San Juan at present.
